What I’m currently using: the Paperblanks Blue Filigree journal, Winnable Executive Journal and the Believe In Yourself journal

Total pages written since last JWW post (July 15): 7

Total pages to date since project inception (Dec 11/13): 1092

Total pages written in 2015: 252

Next week we say goodbye to the Manuscript pen and hello to the pen for August. I’ve really enjoyed using the Manuscript pen these last few weeks. But something new to look forward to is always nice!

Purchases: In a moment of weakness I made a purchase from Wonderpens. Review to come when it gets here. I think I will have enough points for a $100 voucher from the World Mail Panel Surveys next month, so then the guilt free spending spree can begin!

Some points covered this week in my journals:

  • Who am I kidding? There’s only one point covered this past week: my niece’s wedding. It was a beautiful weekend with so many amazing moments, most of which are personal, and will not be shared here. But it was a time of celebration and also of reflection, as I was moved to tears many times during the weekend, as I reflected on the bride and her sister and their journey so far. I also reflected on my own journey, the highs and the lows. There will be more of this next week – I’m barely halfway through the wedding!

Until next post, happy writing!

bleu ocean, j. herbin, mypenneedsink, rouge hematite, stormy grey, wonderpens

Ok so I have two things from wonderpens.ca for you tonight: they are hosting a giveaway of 3 awesome bottles of J. Herbin Bleu Ocean, Stormy Grey and Rouge Hematite! Leave a comment to enter. Shipping within Canada only.

And the second thing is: Liz wrote an inspiring post on journal writing and she promises there will be more to come. I totally agree that journaling is something good for your soul and your physical well being, like water and sunlight.

Finally I felt a kinship with Bob over at mypenneedsink.com when I read his post the weight of analog. It’s true – analog does weigh more, sometimes considerably more. I tend to carry at least two notebooks plus a pencil case full of pens with me every day to work. I may not have time to use the pens or even pen the notebook. But I feel better knowing they are there. There is always the fear of losing one or the other but so far so good. Not good for the back but good for my soul. 🙂

a penchant for paper, decomposition notebooks, inkonhand.com, jack london, reid's stationers, winnable, wonderpens

Elizabeth over at Wonder Pens offers a hilarious take on being a pen clerk in 2014. And their baby is just so darn cute!

I was reading about a new feature at inkonhand.com: Writers on Writing. They will be looking at famous quotes from writers, interpreting them and seeing how they apply to their own writing. First up is Jack London. Looks interesting.

And finally Heather at A Penchant for Paper goes into great detail about Decomposition Notebooks, which I’ve been interested in, ever since I found out that Winnable doesn’t sell refills for their leather journals. I’m coming to the end of mine and I cannot find an exact refill anywhere. I talked to the great folks at Reid’s Stationers and they said the Winnable people suggested composition (or decomposition) notebooks would fit, because they are nearly the same size. I may just have to go with one of those when my Winnable is filled up. Heather’s verdict on the paper quality is disappointing but not surprising. Great review though.

Until next time, happy writing!

1.1 stub nib, avacado, dc supershow blue, de atramentis, heather violet, kaweco, kaweco sport ink roller demonstrator, leuchtturm, monteverde, monteverde prima, private reserve, rhodia, wonderpens, world mail panel

I’ve been involved with World Mail Panel surveys since March of this year, and the money I earn from them (about $15 a month) has gone into the stuff I write about and love – notebooks, pens, ink, stationery, etc. Recently I spent my earnings on a special order through Wonderpens: the Monteverde Prima fountain pen with a 1.1 stub nib, in Purple Swirl. And on Thursday last the pen arrived, along with a few other goodies.

20140828_111949

Amazing packaging – it was like breaking into a safe to remove all the paper and tape. Nothing moved on the trip from Toronto to Calgary that’s for sure.

20140828_112004

The great folks at Wonderpens always include a note saying thank you for the order, and a Fortune Teller fish which intrigued my co-workers! They also wrote thank you on the bottom of my invoice.

20140828_112045

The first tantalizing glimpse!

20140828_112212

Monteverde Prima, Kaweco Sport Ink Roller – Demonstrator, two Leuchtturm notebooks, Rhodia notepad and two ink samples.

20140828_193702

So I ordered ink samples of DC Supershow Blue and Avacado (sic) from Private Reserve. Both colours are really bright. I haven’t inked up any pens with either of these inks but I was still able to do an ink swab.

20140828_200353

On to the notebooks: two Leuchtturm large softcovers, one lined, one grid. And one black Rhodia notepad in Black, lined, as my present one is getting low.

20140828_193417

Next up is the Kaweco Sport Ink Roller – Demonstrator. Yes it’s true: this is not a fountain pen. It is a rollerball. I wanted another rollerball that took fountain pen ink cartridges; the Kaweco is much finer than the Online rollerball I purchased earlier this year.

20140828_194246

I find the Kaweco packaging very appealing; it has a vintage feel. Kaweco is a German company; I always thought they were Japanese for some reason.

20140828_194403

It’s quite a small pen but when posted it’s comfortable in the hand. The pen came with one ink cartridge whose ink I love; I will have to ask John and Liz (Wonderpens) the name of it. The cartridge snapped in very easily and the pen started up right away, with no skipping so far. Great writer; very smooth. I understand why people rave about Kaweco products; if their rollerballs are this amazing I’m sure their fountain pens will not disappoint. Below is a writing sample on my Rhodia pad (my old one).

20140828_195333

Another thing I love about this rollerball is the Demonstrator quality; I really enjoy being able to see the ink cartridge. You can see the colour and how much ink is left.

And now for the star of the show….

20140828_200748

Here she is, the Prima in Purple Swirl. The picture makes the pen look more purple than pink, which is misleading, because the pen definitely looks pink in real life, albeit a deep, dark pink. It’s more of a fuscia than a purple but that’s my opinion. Whatever colour she is, she’s beautiful and I love her.

20140828_201021

I’m a fan of matching the ink to the barrel colour so I thought the De Atramentis Heather Violet would do the trick.

20140828_201122

The pen comes with a glass converter.

20140828_201128

Here’s a closeup of that incredible nib. It has 1.1 stamped on the side turned away from the camera. I ordered a special nib for this one – 1.1 stub – which is a first for me, and I LOVE it. I love how it makes my handwriting appear more elegant somehow. Very smooth writer. The ink didn’t start up right away but it only took a few shakes. I really enjoy how this nib shows the shading of the ink.

20140828_202746

Trust me: in real life the ink is the EXACT same colour as the barrel but this photo doesn’t illustrate that. Very happy with this pen.

20140828_203041

This is a bit blurry but I wanted a photo of my two Primas together. You can really see the detail on the barrel. There are five Primas in the collection: Turquoise, Purple, Green, Tiger Eye (Brown) and Black. I have the Green and the Tiger Eye in my sights next; I don’t think I will buy the Black because it is really different than the other two and I don’t find the design appealing. It’s essentially black with a green line running through it. You can see them here.

So that’s it from Wonderpens this time around. Many thanks to Liz and John for their excellent customer service. Can’t wait to have a big payday from World Mail Panel again….should be around November.

  • 1 bottle of De Atramentis William Shakespeare ink from Goulet Pens; received on June 25
  • 1 Winnable Leather Notebook on July 10

Some topics covered this week:

  • I ordered some fun paperclips on ebay – in the shape of a bird. Can’t wait for them to arrive!
  • Got an email from Wonderpens – my pen is ready to be shipped! So I ordered a few little things to go with it and the box should be here next week. Super excited. Future blog post for sure.
  • Had two very disturbing dreams this week. I’ve never kept a dream journal but I’ve been reading about how important and revealing it can be to track your dreams. I very rarely remember my dreams but these two were so vivid I actually thought they were real. I won’t go into details because I don’t want to think about them but the details are in my journal. If I remember more of them I just might start a dream journal.

Until next week, happy writing!

Some topics covered this week:

  • Is it just me or is the world becoming a colder and ruder place? I had two encounters with SUPER rude people this week with the ultimate result of making me incredibly sad that such behaviour exists. I won’t go into details but good manners elevate us as human beings so what do you say, let’s try them out? Thank you.
  • Patiently waiting for word from Wonderpens.ca that my Monteverde Prima in Purple is in! Then I’m going on a little spending spree so I can take advantage of their free shipping on orders over $100.
  • I’ve been doing some research and most of the birds invading my garden these days for the bird seed buffet are House Sparrows. Halley and I love watching them but it seems they are considered a bit of a pest in most areas. Oh well I like them, and Halley loves her bird tv.
  • A friend told me she is using a journal I gave her last Christmas to record the beautiful moments in her life; she’s writing so much her hand is cramping! I’m so incredibly happy for her, because she deserves a bucket load of beautiful. 🙂
  • Remember my Akkerman ink? Back in March I posted about filling my Manuscript Pen with Akkerman ink and how well it performed after that fill. Well I haven’t used that pen in a long time, maybe even since that fill, and this week I unscrewed the cap and wow, there was no hard starting and no skipping. And that pen used to jam on me all the time with the original ink. Just another reason to love Akkerman ink.
  • I can’t remember if I mentioned we had the gift of graffiti presented to us on the back side of our fence. I phoned the City’s graffiti removal program and it took them less than a week to remove it! We couldn’t believe it. Well done City of Calgary.
  • My husband and I were talking about the passions that define us. We agreed that when you wake up in the morning and you can’t wait to do a certain thing, that’s your passion. I read that somewhere and it’s so true. I wake up anxious to get into my journal. He wakes up anxious to get into his studio and make music. If only we didn’t have to go to work!

Until next week, happy writing!

Some topics covered this week (I did a lot of personal journaling this week, which I do not share here):

  • I’ve decided what I’m spending my credit from World Mail Panel on: the Monteverde Prima in Purple Swirl with a 1.1 italic nib from Wonderpens in Toronto, ON. It will take 2-3 weeks for it to come in. So excited!!
  • Most mornings we see a rather large bird on our drive into work. I’ve finally identified it as a Swainson’s Hawk. It’s a beautiful bird and so far we have only seen one. We wonder if he/she has a mate. There may be more than one and we just see one of them at a time.
  • Operation Save the Tree is going really well. We have sprayed it once (well, David did – I held on to the ladder and watched), and we plan on spraying it again. A few days after spraying it’s looking really green and healthy again. Hurrah!
  • The City of Calgary has a graffitti removing program, and I phoned them up this week to report some edgy artwork on our bac fence. It doesn’t say anything offensive; you can’t make out any words at all. But I guess it’s unsightly. The City will look after it sometime this month.
  • Sleeping patterns are being disrupted as we are experiencing a heat wave here in Calgary. On Friday I slept for a couple of hours in the early evening and then was up until 2:30 am when my husband came home after a gig. But one good thing – I did lots of journaling!

Until next week, happy writing!

Total pages written in 2014: 167

  • 1 pen + 1 bottle of ink = 2 items in a gift set on Jan 14
  • 1 bottle of KoninginneNach-Blauw from Akkerman on Feb 5

Topics covered since last update:

  • Found a buyer for one of my purses on kijiji!
  • Fantasy ordering from wonderpens.ca and stylo.ca
  • Writing in my Zen Journal (future blog post)
  • Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Palliser hotel with my co-workers. It was glorious!
  • Family birthday celebration
  • Finished reading The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (big reason I haven’t been journaling as much)

Yes I’ve been feverishly trying to finish The Eyre Affair before it is due back to the library. I finished it today and I recommend it for any book lover. Fforde’s fantasy world of apostrophe-farting bookworms and nightly audience-run productions of Shakespeare is captivating; it is a true joy to spend time in his world, with his heroine, Thursday Next. Can’t wait to get the next one.

And I’ve started a new journal, sort of. I mentioned the web site Zen Habits last week by Leo Babauta and I’ve been copying some of his posts into my Filofax Flex, and that has impacted my page count in my regular journal. More info on that coming in a future blog post. (I think I have flagged lots of things as future blog posts…I better get cracking with those).

Happy writing!
