Parker Urban in Metallic Brown

amazon, parker urban, warehouse deals

I was browsing Amazon, as I often do, looking at pens. I came across the Parker Urban in the metallic brown finish, and it was $65, which is the average price for an Urban. But then I noticed a box at the bottom right, under the Wish List box, that said Compare Offers on Amazon. There was another box that said Warehouse Deals and it said Want to buy this pen for $30? See our Warehouse Deal. So I clicked on it and sure enough there was one available, but it was “used”. I googled “Amazon Warehouse Deals” and it said these deals were a part of Amazon that “specializes in offering great deals on returned, warehouse-damaged, used or refurbished products that are in good condition but do not meet Amazon’s rigorous standards as new.”

I had never seen this before so I did some more research. Generally people have had good experiences with these deals so I ordered it. It arrived just as quickly as any other Amazon order, and the pen box was only slightly torn at the corner. The pen itself looked to be in perfect condition. I inked it up and it wrote beautifully. 🙂

ilwj capped

I love Parker Urbans. This is my third; in this post I talk about the blue one my dad bought me, and in this post I talk about the Urban gift set I bought from Amazon. I had to have this brown metallic one, because of the great price, but also because the finish reminds me of chocolate ice cream. Also the lines on the barrel give it a science fiction kind of feel, for me, for some reason.

ilwj uncapped

Here it is uncapped.

ilwj nib

Absolutely nothing wrong with the nib. And it writes beautifully.

ilwj writing sample

Here’s a writing sample on Rhodia paper. Black was the only choice of ink, given the black clip, rings and section. A black nib would have been amazing.

inwj three urbans

And here are the three Urbans together.

So that’s my happy experience with Amazon Warehouse Deals. Anyone else have experience with this service? Let me know in the comments.

Happy journaling everyone.

What I’m currently using: the Paperblanks Blue Filigree journal, Winnable Executive Journal, the Seven Seas Writer, and the Franklin Christoph Notebook, which I started during my recent trip to Phoenix.

Total pages written since this post (Nov 4): 30

Total pages to date since project inception (Dec 11/13): 1372

Total pages written in 2015: 532

My Jinhao 159 goes everywhere with me. I will announce the pen for December on November 25.

Purchases: I bought a few things in Phoenix but can’t decide what to review on Sunday. Check back and see!

Some points covered this week in my journals:

  • I have not been successful at NaNoWriMo this year. I know the month isn’t over but I doubt I will be able to produce anything of significance this year. But I am ok with that. Before I left for Phoenix three friends and I attended three NaNoWriMo workshops at our local library, hosted by the Calgary chapter of NaNoWriMo: Wonderful Worlds, Electric Edits, and NaNoWriMo Q&A. They were very enthusiastic individuals and I learned alot. It was great to be in the company of so many writers. If you get a chance to attend a NaNoWriMo event in your area I strongly encourage you to do so.
  • For me the pen(s) and notebook(s) I take with me while traveling are far more important than the clothes and shoes. So I take a lot of time, even when I’m only gone for six days, to choose the gear that is the right combination of writing instrument and paper. I wrote out my packing list using my Delta and my Rembrandt, so they came with me, along with my Jinhao 159 and my Parker Urban in black. Four pens for six days – sounds about right! And I wanted to show my sister the Franklin Christoph notebook so that went into the backpack too. It was an absolute joy to sit at my sister’s kitchen table and reflect on the days. We had a fantastic time in Phoenix, eating, sleeping, reading and pen shopping! Big thanks to my big sis for making it possible. Love you.
  • Speaking of clothes, they are really the last thing on my priority list. Seriously, I hate clothes shopping. I force myself once a year, usually. So it came as a surprise to me when I spotted a coat in this month’s Hello magazine and it inspired me. I tore out the page (it’s ok, I own the magazine) and immediately pasted the picture in my journal and wrote about it. If you’re interested it is the Houndstooth Cape from Zara.com. It doesn’t come in my size but I love it. I may have to go on the hunt for one.
  • Every day I fall a little bit more in love with my Delta. I am *slowly* learning how to NOT post the cap. It does not post as securely as I would like so I leave it off. And I would be very upset if I damaged the resin in any way. It feels so incredibly light without the cap but I’m getting used to it. I wrote alot with it when I was in Phoenix.

Until next post, happy writing!

Do you ever have those days, where you are constantly replaying conversations in your mind and carrying around an anxiety about a certain situation? Well that was me on Saturday. And I knew I had to write it out or it would just fester. But I had lots to do outside of the house so I went on a Journal Field Trip.

I packed up my messenger bag with the supplies: journals (Seven Seas Writer, Paperblanks Ventaglio Rosso Midi, Pierre Belvedere Green), pens (Cadence, TWSBI Eco, both Parker Urbans, Monteverde Purple Prima, 4 different colours of Staples Optiflow, pencil case and some markers), glue runner, paper inserts, and scissors. My aim was to figure out why I was carrying this anxiety around but I also had projects to distract me if the words just wouldn’t come.20150829_134934So I ran a few errands, which included returning a movie to the library (The Theory of Everything – great film). I noticed my favourite library carrel was free so I settled in. I didn’t feel ready to confront the issue in my journal so I thought I would play with paper and glue for awhile. I’m going on a spiritual retreat soon and I printed the prayers for the Stations of the Cross for my Prayer Journal (I am using the Ventaglio Rosso Midi for this purpose). I grabbed the journal and the prayers but realized I had forgotten the glue runner and the scissors. That also meant I couldn’t work in the Pierre Belvedere journal either (keeping track of the solicited reviews for the blog). I still really wanted to write so I had no choice but to jump right in to what was bothering me.

Forty-five minutes later I stopped and re-read my journal entry. I felt freer, lighter. I checked in with my anxiety and found peace. This has happened to me before, of course, as I know the power of journalling to clarify thoughts and feelings and to let resentments and upset go. But this was a complicated burden I had been carrying for a while and I wasn’t sure one 45-minute session would do it. But it did. I left the library with new resolve and a much better frame of mind.

I ticked a few more things off my list and then I was finally able to go to my favourite coffee shop, Good Earth, for an Earl Grey Latte. My reward.

20150829_153607

This time I found myself writing about the previous evening we spent with a friend, eating spaghetti, watching a movie and laughing. And of our plans to take some vacation in September and how excited we are about a last-minute treat David and I have planned for our birthdays. I spent about an hour an a half writing. By the time I finished the latte my hand and shoulder were cramping.

Two different writing sessions, same journal, same pen even. One intense, short and focused, the other carefree, long and playful. The second wouldn’t have been possible without the therapeutic first. I am just so grateful that I have this outlet and can soothe myself with words when needed.

I hope your journal can do the same for you.

Ok so the Pen of the Month for August is…..Parker Urban in Black!

4pen plus quink

I first wrote about this pen in February of 2014; I purchased it in a Parker gift set from Amazon with Christmas gift certificates that year. I really love this pen and it is still in my top 5 (hey now there’s an interesting idea for a blog post…) Anyway I will use this pen every day for the next month and I’m sure I will fall in love with it all over again. Which isn’t really accurate because I don’t think I have ever fallen out of love with it, I’ve just been dazzled by other purchases of late. True love lasts a lifetime and all that.

My next Pen of the Month will be chosen on August 26.

Purchases: My package from Wonderpens arrived today so look for a review of the TWSBI Eco this Sunday. My first TWSBI! I’m excited to try it out.

Some points covered this week in my journals:

  • We watched Hector and the Search for Happiness, which was very good. Turns out happiness is a mixture of sadness, happiness and fear. Without two you can’t recognize the other. Love Simon Pegg and Rosamund Pike.
  • I worked late on Monday night; it was in total a 15 hour day. Thankfully that doesn’t happen too often but it is the reason I didn’t post my weekly Monday Miscellany.
  • I wrote a post about my Crystals Journal and I made lots of notes in my regular journal beforehand.
  • And of course, the wedding narrative continues!

Until next post, happy writing!

Notebooks from Erin Condren

A co-worker of mine purchased one of the Erin Condren Lifeplanners and as I’ve said previously, I was tempted. Boy was I tempted. But I bought two basic notebooks instead, and a few accessories, and they arrived this week.

20150707_184559

I think it took about 10 working days from order to delivery. Personalized items take more time but they do have a number of attractive options that are ready to ship.

20150707_184636

The packaging is exceptional; very bright and cheerful.

20150707_184731

On the left, some elastic bands for keeping the notebooks closed. On the right, Party Pops Markers. Really nice pens with extra-fine tips. And I’m a sucker for pens in their own case. Sigh. Like I need more markers!

20150707_184841

These are the freebies that come with each order. On the left, a postcard, and on the right, a sticker for your notebook. And on the bottom, a package of gift tags.

20150707_185016

Here you can see all of the gift tags. The website says this is for “gifting on the go.”

20150707_185208I included a couple of pen holders in the order.

20150707_185404

This is one of the cover designs that is available for the planner as well as the notebook. This is the Alphabet – Keep It Simple design. You choose the letter and the colour of the large letter as shown here. The covers are laminated. And the bookmark is thick plastic; very sturdy feeling. Both notebooks measure 7″ x 9″ but they are available in 8.5″ x 11″ as well, for $5 extra.

20150707_185431

And here’s the second design I chose, again available for the planner as well. It is called Favorite Things – Keep it Simple. I think this is my favourite of the two covers because it’s so much more personal than just a name or an initial – it’s literally everything I love! You can personalize this by typing in all of the words you want to see on the cover. You can also add photos, or change the font. Erin Condren really allows for a high level of customization.

20150707_185530

The cover design is carried over to the inside. I love the designs on the take note! page – anybody remember Spirograph?? I had one as a child and loved it. It’s nice to know they are still available on Amazon.

20150707_185600

More spirographs! I might colour them in for fun. And the notebook pages begin. The paper is very good. The weight is 70lb and you can certainly tell. A pen test is included further down.

20150707_185636

There are 132 lined pages, each a different colour, followed by 21 blank pages.

20150707_185702

Such an inspiring design. I am a lover of colour so the pages really appeal to me.

20150707_185728

This is the last page of both notebooks. I laughed out loud when I saw this because this is one of my favourite quotes.

20150707_185748

The back cover of this design carries on the favourite things theme.

20150707_190008

The bookmark is included with each notebook. It is thick – thicker than a credit card – and snaps into the rings very easily. It’s a nice touch. You can also purchase dividers and undated calendar pages. So many options.

20150712_100900

The pen loops are super sticky – just as good as the Leuchttum 1917 ones. And the loops themselves are stretchy – I didn’t try my Jinhao 159 but the Parker Urban had no problems. And of course the Party Pop Marker fits perfectly.

20150712_101006

And here is the pen test. I didn’t like the feel of the rollerball and ballpoint pens on this paper, and I was very happy to note it took fountain pen ink like a dream.

20150712_101058

Slight bleed through (those Sharpie markers) and some show through, but nothing to worry about. Fountain pen friendly!

Overall I am very impressed with the quality of these notebooks, and the customization options are numerous. There are more accessories and lots more cover styles available so check out the website. I was also emailed a $10 off coupon for my next order. I don’t know when that will be, as the exchange is brutal right now and shipping is a flat fee of $20 to Canada. Each of these notebooks cost $22 due to the personalization. Worth it, in my opinion, but still pricey. You get the quality you pay for.

After helping me with this review my assistant took a long overdue nap. 🙂

A Pen Present from Dad

Some of you will know that my father, who is 82, lives in our basement apartment. A few weeks ago my Dad told me he wanted to buy me “a nice pen.” He does not read this blog; he is not a computer user at all. But he sees me journal with fountain pens and I often show him my purchases. He especially enjoyed my vintage Waterman because it was made a year after he was born.

So when he wanted to buy me a pen I took to Amazon and found a Parker Urban in a beautiful royal blue. The pen was available from a London seller, and they offered free engraving and a gorgeous lilac pen case! It arrived this past Friday and I am absolutely delighted with it. Dad likes it too!

20150626_211619

I am a big fan of Parker writing instruments; I talked about my black Parker Urban in this post and see this post for my review of my Parker Vector calligraphy set. I use my black Parker Urban a lot so when I came across the royal blue one on Amazon I knew it would be a good addition to my collection.

20150626_211958

I’m really pleased with the leather pen case. The P doesn’t stand for Parker but for Pagani, which I assume is the maker of the case.”Pagani Collection, London” is stamped on the back of the case, and also on the underside of the flap. The pen sits comfortably inside the case, within an attached elastic. There is also a smaller elastic which can carry a pen cartridge. The case came with the pen inside as well as a cartridge.

20150626_212422

Here she is! Engraving was included in the purchase price. I chose the Chopin Script and “For H Love Dad.”

20150626_212506

Here’s a close up of the engraving. It’s beautifully done and I love how bright it is, it really pops against the blue. I would have preferred the engraving to be in silver, to match the rest of the pen, but I have no idea if that was an option. I have to say the communication with the seller was less than ideal. I’m also hoping the engraving does not flake off – time will tell. I’m quite delighted with the finished product.

20150626_213234

As I said the pen came with a cartridge but I prefer converters so I popped my Parker converter in and filled it with Parker Quink Blue.

20150626_214049

The nib is a medium and super smooth. The shape of the Parker Urban really fits my hand so the writing experience with this blue one was just as satisfying as with my black one.

20150626_224427

So that’s my new pen. It was a wonderful, unexpected surprise when Dad said he wanted to buy me a special pen. Mission accomplished. Thanks Dad!

I’ve been seeing lots of videos and blog posts about what people carry with them every day. So I thought I would do one too. It’s about what I carry with me every day, an update on my planner, and kind of a “what’s in my bag” post as well. Some of these things I’ve talked about in previous blog posts, some stuff will be new.

laptop bag

This is my Lula Fashion Business laptop bag. When it doesn’t hold my work laptop it holds what my purse doesn’t.

inside laptop bag

Love the purple lining.

twilight pen roll

I carry my Cadence pens with me.

blue pencil case

This pencil case carries lip balm and my phone charger…but no pencils!

medicine bag

My medicine bag, which contains medication, wet wipes, a hand mirror and breath freshener.

cross journal

I carry my journal with me everywhere I go. The yellow pencil case is attached to the cover of the journal by a large elastic. I found it at a dollar store, believe it or not, and it works beautifully. A few more of my favorite fountain pens live in here. The Monteverde Prima and my Parker Urban are in the pen loops.

planner

And here is my planner! We are still together! You recall I first started using this planner on December 1 of last year. I wanted to use this planner for all of 2014; I didn’t think I would make it this far. I must admit I’ve been feeling the “planner itch” as I’ve heard some call it; I’ve been reading about the Hobonichi Planners at Plannerisms and I feel tempted. One of my InCoWriMo penpals sent me some Tomoe River paper, which is the paper in the Hobonichi Planners, and it is wonderful. But I am going to stick with my Martha Stewart disc-bound system. It’s been working great since December so why change?

So that’s it for my laptop bag. I also carry my purse every day so I thought I would include that too.

roots purse

My current bag is the Roots Londoner. It is my second leather Roots bag and I really love it. It’s very roomy but if I try to put everything from my laptop bag into this bag it stretches the leather and is too heavy for my shoulder. So I split the weight up between the two.

lip gloss and ricola

In the zippered pockets on the front I keep lip gloss and Green Tea and Echinacea Ricola.

black change purse

My change purse.

filofax wallet

My Filofax wallet is a green chameleon. I found it at my local Reid’s Stationers on sale. I can see why lots of people use it as a wallet; I’ve been using it without incident for over a year.

rosary

For as long as I can remember I’ve carried a Rosary in my purse. This one I picked up at our local church.

toffeenut notebook

Remember my Toffeenut Planner? I didn’t actually end up using the planner but I do still have the case. I found small notebooks that fit it perfectly so I carry it around with me just in case I need to make some notes that wouldn’t normally go in my Cross journal (like directions or my grocery list).

sunglasses

And finally my sunglasses, which I’m realizing kinda match the color of my bag.

And that’s it! I hope this wasn’t too terribly boring. I’m always interested in other people’s bags and what they carry every day. Would love to see what you carry!

Journal I’m currently using: Navy Blue Cross Journal

Total pages written since last JWW post (Feb 19): 7

Total pages to date since project inception (Dec 11/13): 178

Total pages written in 2014: 123

Total number of notebooks/pens/ink bought since self-imposed spending freeze (Jan 1/14): 3

  • 1 pen + one bottle of ink = 2 items in a gift set on Jan 14
  • 1 bottle of KoninginneNach-Blauw from Akkerman, via Vanness Pens (see Feb 5 post for why it was impossible to resist) on Feb 5

Topics covered since last update:

  • My employer’s employee assistance program – very helpful
  • I won two journals and a set of bracelets from Anna Brim
  • Received my Akkerman ink from Vanness Pens (more info below!)

Wow that’s embarrassing, a whopping 7 pages written this week. In my defense, I was reading my 600+ page library book, Just One Evil Act, during every spare minute of the last week. It’s due back soon and it’s great, so I didn’t want to put it down. Finished it last night. 🙂

So it has been pointed out to me that I have not shown you what the culprits who ruined my spending freeze look like. The Parker Urban GT set arrived awhile ago; I posted a picture of the pen set from Amazon in this post, and it looked EXACTLY like it, except for the polishing cloth. This is what it looks like now:

1parker set

I have used two cartridges, filled another pen with the black quink, and of course used the pen. I have not read How to Write with a Fountain Pen but I will – who knows, I might be doing it wrong!

2pen in holder

This is the Parker Urban in the pen holder of my Cross journal. Have I mentioned how much I love this pen? It is definitely my number two fave, after the Monteverde Prima of course.

3writing plus nib

A writing sample and a closeup of the nib.

4pen plus quink

It’s total darkness in that bottle; it’s a beautiful black. I like the blue too; I just may have to buy a bottle of that too.

Speaking of bottles of ink!! My Akkerman bottle arrived in a big cardboard box filled with styrofoam popcorn and two different types of bubble wrap. I was already impressed but then I opened the inner Akkerman box and it too was filled with more styrofoam popcorn. The bottle was wrapped in a bag and a small Rhodia notebook was wedged firmly between the bottle and the sides of the box. I don’t think that bottle moved a centimetre during it’s long journey from Arkansas to Miami to Calgary. Excellent packaging; thank you Vanness!

5akkerman box and rhodia nb

I was afraid the ink would freeze and the bottle would break. But it arrived in perfect condition and I am absolutely thrilled with it.

6ink bottle

This is the 150 ml bottle, which Akkerman is discontinuing; they will offer the 60 ml bottle instead which is just a smaller version of the iconic bottle.

What makes the bottle unique is the neck design. There is a marble inside the glass that sits at the base of the neck. Tip the bottle over and the neck fills with ink. Dip your pen into the reservoir to fill. Then you can tip the bottle to the side and all the ink drains back into the bottom. Genius! I tried to take a picture to show you a) the marble and b) the colour of the ink, which is called Koninginne Nach-Blauw.

7ink colour

It’s super hard to see the marble but trust me it’s there. And the ink has stuck to the sides of the neck so you can sort of see the colour. I haven’t inked any pens with it yet, as I’m in the process of cleaning them. There will be a future blog post about it, for sure.

The P.W. Akkerman website has a colour chart, and No. 7 looks like a stormy sky to me. Can’t wait to ink up a pen with it.

Until next week, happy writing.

Most of my InCoWriMo letters received to date. Got some more today.

I just thought this was funny. It appears my ink shipment left Arkansas and went on a mini vacation. First it went to Miami (who could blame it?) and then all the way to somewhere in northern Saskatchewan. It’s been there for a whole 24 hours. I keep checking but it’s not moving. Sigh. I hope it’s not freezing, but it probably is. 😦

Total number of notebooks/pens/ink bought since self-imposed spending freeze: 2 on Jan 14

Topics covered:

  • Still waiting for ebay items ordered at the beginning of December [sigh]
  • Beautiful letter from one of my penpals
  • Countdown to InCoWriMo
  • Temptation in March: Goulet Pens will have a new Monteverde Prima available, in purple and black!
  • Hosting my bookclub meeting for January
  • Pizza dough recipe I saw on Youtube
  • My Parker fountain pen set arrived from Amazon (future blog post)
  • Caught Stereophonics on Jools Holland
  • Stressful situation brewing at work 😦

I’ve been writing in my journal with my new Parker Urban GT which arrived in my fountain pen set. Really nice pen. Took me a few tries to get the ink flowing but now it’s a consistent starter. A new box of stationery from Peter Pauper Press arrived with it so I will probably use some of that for InCoWriMo. And, wonder of wonders, I resisted for another 7 days the temptations of ebay and the rest of the internet to buy a notebook/pen/ink. But watch out in March with the new Monteverde Prima offered by Goulet Pens in purple and black!

Until next week, happy writing.
