#giveagirlajournal, jamie ridler studios

I recently became a subscriber over at Jamie Ridler Studios, mainly through finding her on YouTube, and because she was talking about a Do Good initiative she was launching called Give a Girl a Journal. And that initiative launched today. Jamie, a creative living coach, has asked journalers to share how they came to journal and why this practice is so important to them. Here is my story.

My earliest memories are of pretending to write. I would find a magazine that mom and dad were finished with and I would cover the page with gibberish. I filled in the spaces between paragraphs and around words; all of the white space would be filled with my scribbles. I felt very important and wise, writing down “words” before I even knew what they were. I saw my parents writing grocery lists, journal entries, expense reports, client summaries, letters and Christmas cards and I was determined to do the same, even though I had no clear idea what they were doing. I just knew I HAD TO WRITE. My hand had a life of its own. It still does.

Once I learned to write I never stopped. I wrote stories and poems. I wrote in my diary about the wonder and pain and sharp edges of being a girl. My notebooks were my best friends because they always listened and never judged. They have been with me for every decision, every celebration, every obstacle, every miracle, every sadness and every triumph. They remain my best friends, still listening without judgement. I still write stories and poems and my notebooks are still my safe place, my world, my greenhouse, my lab, for ideas, plans and schemes. My journal is freedom, the one thing that endures.

Everyone needs a safe place to meet themselves. And through Jamie Ridler’s initiative, Give a Girl a Journal, we can Nominate a Girl to receive a journaling package. Or for $20 USD we can Sponsor a Journal for a nominated girl.

And it’s not just girls who need this; you might remember the post I made about the young man who lives beside me who is facing life with an inoperable brain tumour. I gave him a journal because it was the best gift I could give him. Young people in our community need tools to get through the process of becoming who they are. We know the power of our journals and we should share it. Join Jamie Ridler’s campaign and give a girl a journal so she always has a best friend to hug tight to her chest, and hear her inner voice.

stitch in time, travel journal

I’m on a little holiday at the moment but wanted to post something tonight. Being on a break from the every day I wanted to share this post on Stitch in Time on her travel journal. I love how professional and vintage the journal looks. I wish I could make mine look like that but at least I’m documenting my trips completely these days. Or trying to! 🙂

Visiting Yourself in the Past

Great post on dispatchfromla.com about re-reading past journals. I look back at mine on occasion, and I’ve been known to remove pages. But for the most part I leave them intact. I write what I need to write and if anyone reads them down the road they will know me and hopefully love me and understand.

The post also has some beautiful pictures of journals. And great quotes:

There are a lot of ways to be truthful and not all of them involve gut wrenching psychological poop storms.

The author makes a great point about looking in a mirror of sorts and seeing yourself through your own eyes, at 20, at 30, at 40. You can learn so much about yourself, how you handle things, what positive things you do, and how you sabotage yourself. You may see patterns emerging, which you can work on, depending on if you want to change the pattern or encourage it. Or you can write your truth and set it free, never looking at it again.

So whether you have a complete set of journals from age six onwards, or you have one book that will be destroyed as soon as you finish it, I hope you enjoy the process and are richer for it. Happy writing.

books, handwriting, jack kerouac, journal, pens

I have written out excerpts from books I love for many years now. I have a couple of notebooks full of them. When I am struck by the beauty of a sentence I have to write it down so I can better remember it, and through practice recognize the same thing in my own words, if I should be so lucky.

I was reminded of this practice when I read this post by Marisa at The Unwritten Word. Not only can you savour great writing, you can also use your favorite pens and ink, and fill up your journal with inspiration.

The greats will teach us to be better writers by example. We just have to listen.

anna brim

On February 17 I wrote a blog post about a giveaway I won from Anna Brim. And this past Thursday it arrived!

letter from anna

She wrote a wonderful letter too, which I really enjoyed. And I love the bunny and guinea pig in the corners.

package

Like a beautiful present!

unwrapped

The goodies: a Filofax Flex, a set of bracelets, a coil bound journal and some unexpected art postcards.

coil bound journal

Truthfully I fell in love with this journal when Anna showed it off in one of her videos. I was going to email her and ask her where I might be able to get one over here. I love the images of England all over it.

journal open

The inside of the journal. Love it!

postcards

Just one of the many things Anna does is professional photography. These postcards were a bonus from her collection. You can check out her work on http://www.alohaphotography.com.

filofax flex

I’ve heard of the Filofax Flex notebook system but this is the first time I’ve seen it. It’s a completely customizable system, according to their webpage. I really like the movable pen loop. And it fits standard 8.5 x 5.5 notebooks, which I have a ton of.

flex open

The jot book can go on either side, and so can the ruled notebook. And the pen loop can be moved around too. It’s really neat. And I LOVE the colour.

bracelets

And the beautiful bracelets!

Thank you so much Anna for the thoughtful giveaway and the heartfelt letter. And everyone else be sure to check her out on her various social media; see my previous post for links. Thanks again Anna!

I have to tell you about Anna, aka Mrs. Brimbles and also aka Ginger Juice. She is a wonderful lady who shares her life and loves on her two Youtube channels: Anna Brim and Ginger Juice. She also has a great blog, along with other various social media. She is a fantastic artist (I’m thinking of buying her art cards) and art journaller, and I find it pure joy to watch her life unfold through her vlogs on Youtube. On top of all this she has an Etsy shop, where she sells gorgeous planner printables with animal motifs. If you haven’t already you should check her out.

Anna is a very generous soul and hosts many giveaways on her channels. I’ve entered every one. And today I woke up to this video! I had to play it twice to make sure. Excited!! I will share as soon as they arrive.

planners, writing

Great post by Giftie Etcetera about why she writes stuff down in her planner. I am the same way: I need paper. End of story. I’m not afraid to admit there are whole aspects of technology that I do not understand. Nor do I feel the need to understand them. I know I work best with a pen and paper and that’s it.

So the next time someone comments on my lack of technical prowess I will do what Giftie does; sip my tea and smile.

Wow what a beautiful way to have Santa write your little one a letter. I wonder if he’ll write one to me? I’d frame it, so beautiful.

Burning Your Past

journal, writing

I read this article and was intrigued by the last paragraph:

There are historians. There are burners. I’d never advise on journal-burning matters. But I can tell you this: Traveling lighter helps me shine brighter.

The post deals with the reasons why the author chose to burn 20 years of journals. The idea both attracts and repels me. I look at my completed journals as accomplishments, as therapy, as old friends. But I do not re-read them very often and they sit on my shelf, taking up space. And if I die tomorrow some of the words I wrote could hurt the person who goes through my stuff. But as a writer do I care? It’s how I felt at the time. I can’t go through life worrying about how my writing might affect others, if they ever get to see it. I don’t set out to hurt but writing without truth is pointless.

I can understand why the author burned her journals and I just might do the same. What would you do?

I love tea. And I love unique ideas for paper crafts. This post from diysara combined the two: teabag tag page tabs! Great idea for recycling the tea tags. Very colourful and practical too.
